A Celebratory gala will be held on September 18 and all art pieces made for Inspirations touched by cancer will be on display at the Old City Jewish Art Center from September 19 through October 9
July 9, 2019, Philadelphia – Twist Out Cancer, an international non-profit charitable organization that provides psychosocial support to individuals touched by cancer through creative arts programming, announced today that it is bringing its signature program, Brushes With Cancer, to Philadelphia. The program matches previvors, survivors, and caregivers (referred to as Inspirations) with accomplished artists working in a variety of mediums. Those touched by cancer share their ‘twist on cancer’ – stories, feelings and experiences with an artist – who then uses this information to create a unique art piece that is representative of their journey with cancer. From the Philadelphia metropolitan area, 27 Inspirations have been matched with 27 Artists. The Brushes With Cancer Gala and Exhibition will be held on Wednesday, September 18 at 7 p.m. at Yards Brewing Company, 500 Spring Garden Street, Philadelphia. Following the Gala, the artwork will be on display from September 19 through October 9 at the Old City Jewish Art Center, 119 N. 3rd Street, Philadelphia. During this time, the public will have several opportunities to view the unique works of art created for those touched by cancer, learn about the stories that inspired them, and purchase the artwork. This includes First Friday events, an intimate reception with the Inspirations and Artists, and TwistShops, which are art therapy workshops. In addition to being auctioned at the Brushes With Cancer Gala, the artwork will also be available for purchase online before the event. This will allow individuals from across the world to view the artwork, learn about the stories that inspired them, as well as provide them with an opportunity to purchase the artwork. All proceeds from the art sales will help Twist Out Cancer bring its programming to more people touched by cancer in the Philadelphia area. The art auction and all events at the Old City Jewish Art Center will be announced on Twist Out Cancer’s Facebook page. “We are so excited to bring this transformative program to Philadelphia which is home to world-class hospitals and a growing and flourishing art community,” said Jenna Benn Shersher, the founder and executive director of Twist Out Cancer. “This will also be the first time that the unique artwork made for Inspirations at Brushes With Cancer will be on display for a month after our celebratory gala. Our goal is to continue to amplify the Inspirations' stories, highlight the Artists' creations, and build community from near and far. We believe that having multiple points of intersection will help to continue to grow the program and build the supportive community that is necessary for all individuals touched by cancer to heal.” Jazz singer and songwriter Jesse Kyle is the emcee for the Brushes With Cancer Gala, which will also feature a keynote address from Devon Messner, a Stage 4 Cancer Survivor. The Gala will also feature a dance performance from Meredith Klein and Jake Spatz (both from the Philadelphia Argentine Tango School) to music from Pianist Emiliano Messiez and Javier Sanchez playing the Bandoneon. The night will end as Inspirations, Artists, and all attendees will have the chance to dance to the music from a local DJ. General admission tickets to Brushes With Cancer in Philadelphia are $75 and includes access to the art exhibition and auction at 7 p.m., dinner, drinks, and live entertainment. VIP Tickets are $125 and feature an A Month Long Celebration of Twist Out Cancer’s Brushes With Cancer Program in Philadelphia Page 2 early entry at 6 p.m., a VIP reception that includes early viewing and bidding of the artwork, a meet and greet with the Inspirations and Artists, and access to a VIP reception that includes unlimited drinks, appetizers, and live entertainment.
