TICKETS ARE NOW ON SALE FOR TWIST OUT CANCER’S

BRUSHES WITH CANCER ART EXHIBITION AND GALA IN DETROIT

An Inspiration, someone touched by cancer, is paired with an Artist who creates

a unique piece of artwork that represents their journey with cancer.

May 28, 2019, Detroit – Twist Out Cancer, an international non-profit charitable organization that provides psychosocial support to individuals touched by cancer through creative arts programming, announced today that tickets are now on sale for its signature program, Brushes With Cancer, which will be held at the Detroit Shipping Company, 474 Peterboro Street, on Thursday, August 1 at 6 p.m.  This unique celebration of survivorship and hope pairs previvors, survivors, and caregivers (referred to as Inspirations) with accomplished artists working in a variety of mediums.  Those touched by cancer share their ‘twist on cancer’ – stories, feelings and experiences – with the artist, which serves as the inspiration for the art.  For this program, 22 Inspirations have been matched with 22 Artists, all from the Detroit metropolitan area.

“We are excited to bring this unique and meaningful program to the Detroit area, where some of our most empathic Artists and brave Inspirations have come from in the last seven years,” said Jenna Benn Shersher, the founder and executive director of Twist Out Cancer.  “We’re so grateful to have the opportunity to bring this program closer to home and have a positive impact on those touched by cancer in the region.”

The program is being brought to Detroit by August Spree, who is a cancer survivor herself and has also been a caregiver.  August was an Inspiration at the 2015 Brushes With Cancer Gala in Chicago and is thrilled to bring the influential program to her home in Detroit.

“I am so proud to bring this program to the Detroit community,” said August Spree, who is a Twist Out Cancer board member and the host committee chair for Brushes With Cancer in Detroit.  “Helping those who have dealt with cancer find the points of beauty that are hidden within a painful situation is what this program is about.  The level of connection has been inspiring and the art community in Detroit is so generous – I can’t wait to celebrate with everyone.”

The keynote speaker for this year’s gala is Dr. Eddie Connor, who is a best-selling author, international speaker, college professor, actor, and a radio and television correspondent.  He is also a survivor of stage 4 cancer and empowers people to overcome obstacles.  Dr. Eddie is the founder of the mentoring program, Boys 2 Books, which empowers young males via literacy, leadership, and life skills enrichment and became the impetus for President Barack Obama's, My Brother's Keeper initiative.

General admission tickets are $85 and includes access to the art exhibition and auction, dinner, drinks, and live entertainment.  Food and drinks will be provided throughout the evening by the Detroit Shipping Company and Hip Hop Bake Shop.  Guests will also be treated to the music of Jesse Palter, Nicole New, and DJ Lynda Carter.  The artwork will be auctioned the night of the event, and will remain on display in the gallery at Detroit Shipping Company throughout the month of August.  Supporters such as Shinola, the Lipstick Journey, Equinox Fitness and more have generously donated items for a raffle.  Tickets and more information is available at /www.brusheswithcancerdetroit.com.
