The Story
Kelli Kim-Eng
Kelli Kim-Eng
Richmond, VA
Ovarian cancer survivor
Twist on Cancer: The only constant in this life is change. You never know what tomorrow will bring. We all grieve life events in different ways, but this experience has reminded me.. you are NEVER alone. We are all going through a hard battle: life. But, if you look around you— there are helpers everywhere. Give them a chance. You don’t have to go through the battle alone.

“Beautiful Sky on a Terrible Day”
Acrylic on canvas
20” x 16” x .75”
$650
Artist Statement: My inspiration, Kelli Kim-Eng, said the most amazing thing when we were talking about our artwork. She loves watching the sky during sunrise and sunset and seeing the colors, the clouds, the light, and the dark playfully dance with each other to mark another day. She said, "Seeing a BEAUTIFUL SKY ON A TERRIBLE DAY can change your outlook. The sky serves as a reminder that the only certainty in life in change." Well, that's about as perfect an inspirational message as can be. I asked her to take a picture of one of these colorful moments to use as my reference photo, and I recreated the scene with a fauvist flair, using exaggerated colors and shapes. My hope is that after looking at the painting we created together, the viewer is infused with what William Wordsworth called, “that blessed mood, in which the burthen of the mystery, in which the heavy and the weary weight of all this unintelligible world, is lightened.”
