Survivor
Twist on Cancer: I loved that this program was my silver lining in the storm clouds. I learned about brushes with cancer shortly after diagnosis. I had no idea how many people would be brought into my life through cancer. My journey has taught me to share my experience as much as possible, with the hope that I may be able to help someone with their journey. Just as so many have shared their journeys and stories with me. My artist has become a friend and has helped me along my journey. Cancer will never leave me emotionally. I have to learn to live as a survivor and thrive as I reach 3 months cancer free 1/31/2025), then 6 months, 1 year, and so on. My journey will continue, but I am so blessed by all that I have met and have helped me and become one of my "support squad" along the way.

Artist Statement: "Friendship-Receptor Positive" is a tribute to the strength of human connection, inspired by Ericka’s very recent journey with breast cancer. Created with ink, watercolor, acrylic, and oil paint on canvas, this piece layers depth, vibrance, and texture to evoke peace, steadiness, joy, and timelessness.

At the heart of the painting is an old brick bridge spanning a lush tropical valley. The initials "E" and "W" engraved on its plaques honor Ericka’s legacy of building deep, meaningful friendships. This bridge symbolizes the support system she cultivated long before her diagnosis—bonds so strong that when she needed help, her friends easily crossed that bridge to be there for her. The scene is serene yet powerful, with palm plants embracing the structure and a misty path leading into a bright and luminous horizon. The moss-covered bricks suggest resilience, endurance, and the beauty of relationships that stand the test of time.

This piece challenged me artistically, as its intricate details pushed me beyond my usual approach. The process took months, yet every moment spent was a reflection of the depth of Ericka's impact on those around her.

I hope this painting invites viewers to reflect on their own support systems and the strength found in friendships and relationships. I hope it can stand as a reminder that the bridges we build in life are often the ones that carry us through our hardest moments.
