Twist on Cancer: Cancer... It's a word I knew all too well as I lost my brother as a teenager to his battle with cancer and then became an RN and see it daily when caring for patients. However, hearing the words "You have breast cancer" changed me. When I was first diagnosed, I knew right away I would battle and fight to win. It took its toll on me physically, mentally and emotionally. Looking back, I learned so much from this process. I would say my twist on cancer is it taught me to be "ME" again. To look for the good, to be a little selfish, to do the things that make me happy and bring me joy. Working with Angela, I have seen and learned so much about how I dealt with my cancer treatment and finally moved on. Life is a gift and that gift is so valuable. I am now living life to its fullest and cannot wait to see what the future holds.

“Resilient Tides”
Paper, PVA, acrylic paint on wood
20"w x 20"h x 2"d
$800
Artist Statement: When creating this piece, I was challenged to create something that really encompassed my inspiration’s experience and strength. I had the privilege of spending significant time with my inspiration, getting to know things that she liked, her background, her supportive family, and the multifaceted layers of her experiences.
For one of our meetings, we took a long walk that was filled with conversations and shared moments of getting lost. It was then that the art piece came to life. Amongst many dormant trees, one tree stood out, vibrant and growing—perhaps an embodiment of her connection to nature and her determination. I chose to layer decorative Japanese papers for the artwork, a material that is both flexible and delicate, mirroring my inspiration’s steadfast spirit. The artwork features a book that unfolds like a life story. A notably large wave emerges from the book, referencing a challenging time in my inspiration’s life, yet it is supported by a strong raft—a metaphor for her family’s unwavering support that keeps her afloat.
This piece is a tribute to resilience and the profound exploration of life experiences. My inspiration’s layered perspective and our collaboration have deeply influenced the emotion and meaning interwoven into this work. This piece, therefore, is not just an artwork; it's a celebration of life, strength, human resilience, and sincere connection.
