Twist on Cancer: As daunting as it is to hear that you have cancer, I am a true believer your outlook and attitude directly impacts how you get through it. From the moment I was diagnosed I knew that I would do whatever it took to beat it and be on this earth for many years to come. I never felt sorry for myself or said “Why me?” Rather, I kept a positive attitude and didn’t let it interfere with my life. I went to work every day throughout my treatment, even more inspired to do the work I love as a high school counselor. I wanted to be a good role model for my own children to know that no matter how hard life may get, you can get through anything! As I met others impacted by the disease, I came to realize that cancer does not discriminate and that so many people are affected every day. As my 9-year anniversary is around the corner, I reflect on how grateful I am for this life and certainly wake up each day trying to be better than the day before. I am reminded of the importance of my family and friends and how the simplest of gestures can impact those around you. Thanks, Twist Out Cancer for this opportunity! I was lucky to work with my awesome artist, Bob Cowell, and gain a new friendship thanks to this amazing program. This is an example of how a difficult situation can lead to new connections with people you may never have encountered in your life!

Artist Statement: From our very first conversation, I felt an immediate connection in our ease of interaction with Allyson. She shared her story with unwavering determination and honesty, revealing a visible strength that defied the immense hardships she faced. My goal was to create a piece that not only reflected her journey but also incorporated her essence directly into the work.
As we talked, key elements emerged as powerful symbols of her journey. The central figure, an owl, symbolizes her wisdom and the insight she gained through her experience. The long, flowing hair is a direct nod to her determination to keep her sense of self and femininity, which she steadfastly maintained throughout her treatments. The colors paired bruising from injuries endured and her colorful, joyful attitude. This project pushed me to work in a way I hadn’t before, not just as an artist, but as a witness to an incredible story of resilience. The final piece is a testament to the powerful collaboration between Allyson’s journey and my own creative process.
