Survivor
Twist on Cancer: I am an 11‑year cancer survivor whose journey has been shaped as much by curiosity and humor as by medicine. Collaborating with artist Federico to tell my story transformed pain into meaning—reminding me that creativity, community, and participation in clinical research keep me hopeful and engaged. I share my experience to honor how far I’ve come and to encourage others to find their own voice in the healing process.

Artist Statement: Comics are a humble yet powerful storytelling medium that allows you to capture and convey the reality of living with and fighting cancer. When I met Faith, I was amazed by her cancer journey, which began thirteen years ago when she was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer. Her resilience and determination are remarkable, and her decision to take charge of a situation that can leave you raw, disoriented, and somehow Defenseless is truly an example to follow. It has been an honor and a privilege to translate Faith’s journey into a nine-page comic. I hope it captures her bravery. The process involved learning about Faith’s experience with cancer and engaging in a continuous back-and-forth dialogue to ensure her story was accurate and the facts were carefully checked. I wish I could have included every amazing detail, but even though the limitations of the medium made that impossible, all of that information deeply informed the final work. Thank you, Faith and BwC, for allowing me to bring Faith’s resilient story to the public.
