Twist on Cancer: When I was diagnosed with cancer at 15, I felt like I had no control over anything. My life was being decided for me, and I had very little say. Even things like who knew details about my diagnosis and journey were decided for me. Until one day, I opened my computer and started writing. I created a blog that shared my journey on my own terms. And I found something I could control. I found a way to write my own story when the world had different ideas. This control over even a small aspect of my life, helped me through challenging times, and helped me discover my life’s passion.

Artist Statement: This sculptural piece explores resilience, transformation, and self-authorship in the face of adversity. The figure emerges from fractured stone and crystalline forms, symbolizing the moment strength breaks through limitation. Translucent elements represent clarity, vulnerability, and inner light, while darker textures reference the weight and uncertainty that often surround illness. The composition captures motion — not escape, but emergence — a powerful transition from confinement toward agency. The work was inspired by collaborating with Kayla, whose journey with cancer began at age fifteen. In hearing her story, I was struck by the moment she reclaimed control by sharing her experience through writing, choosing to tell her story on her own terms. That act of self-expression became central to the sculpture: the idea that, even in circumstances defined by forces beyond our control, creative voice and personal choice can serve as powerful anchors. Creating this piece was both a technical and emotional process. Through layered materials, contrasting textures, and dynamic structure, I aimed to reflect not only struggle but momentum — the energy of moving forward. Working alongside Kayla’s inspiration shaped the artwork into a celebration of courage, determination, and the discovery of purpose through challenge. Ultimately, this sculpture is intended as a symbol of empowerment: a visual reminder that strength can emerge from fracture, and that writing one’s own story is itself an act of resilience.
