Navigating Cancer with Connection: Insights from Jackie Herigot of Imerman Angels

A Life Shaped by Cancer—and Connection

Jackie Herigot’s connection to cancer began long before her professional role. After losing several family members to the disease, including her mother, cancer became a defining part of her life story. For years, she associated it with diagnosis followed by loss.

That perspective shifted when she met Imerman Angels founder Johnny Imerman, who introduced her to a different reality—one rooted in hope, connection, and shared experience. Inspired by this approach, Jackie joined Imerman Angels in 2012 and has since dedicated her career to ensuring that no one faces cancer alone.

When Cancer Becomes Personal—Again

In 2019, Jackie’s world was once again reshaped by cancer. Her sister was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer, and at the same time, Jackie herself was diagnosed with skin cancer.

This dual experience deepened her understanding of both the patient and caregiver perspectives. It also led to a critical discovery: Jackie carries Lynch syndrome, a genetic mutation that increases the risk of several cancers.

With that knowledge came a shift in identity—as a previvor—and a commitment to proactive, preventative care.

Understanding Lynch Syndrome

Lynch syndrome is a hereditary condition that significantly increases the risk of cancers such as colorectal and endometrial cancer. For individuals who carry this mutation, early and consistent screenings are essential.

Jackie emphasizes that being a previvor means taking action before cancer develops—choosing awareness and prevention as a way to take back a sense of control in an otherwise uncertain journey.

The Power of Connection: Inside Imerman Angels

At the heart of Imerman Angels is a simple yet profound mission: to ensure that anyone impacted by cancer has access to someone who truly understands what they are going through.

Through its one-on-one mentorship program, the organization connects cancer fighters, survivors, previvors, and caregivers with trained mentors who share similar experiences. With nearly 17,000 volunteers, these connections provide something uniquely powerful—empathy rooted in lived experience.

This kind of support fills a critical gap in care, offering emotional understanding that extends beyond what clinical teams can provide.

Why Mentorship Matters

There is a distinct kind of comfort in speaking with someone who has walked a similar path. Mentorship offers more than advice—it provides perspective, reassurance, and a sense of possibility.

While doctors guide treatment plans, mentors help individuals navigate the emotional realities of cancer: the uncertainty, the fear, and the day-to-day challenges that often go unspoken.

These connections remind people that they are not alone—and that others have made it through.

Supporting the Caregivers

Caregivers are an essential, yet often overlooked, part of the cancer journey. They carry emotional, physical, and mental burdens while supporting their loved ones.

Jackie is a strong advocate for ensuring caregivers receive support as well. At Imerman Angels, caregivers are matched with mentors who understand their unique challenges, creating space for their experiences to be seen, heard, and supported.

Because caring for the caregiver is just as important as caring for the patient.

The Role of Art in Healing

Jackie’s journey also intersects with Twist Out Cancer through her participation in Brushes with Cancer. Paired with an artist, her story was transformed into a visual piece—an experience she describes as unexpectedly therapeutic.

Art creates space for expression when words fall short. It allows individuals to process, reflect, and share their stories in deeply meaningful ways. Programs like Brushes with Cancer demonstrate how creativity can become a powerful tool for healing and connection.

A More Human Approach to Cancer Support

Jackie Herigot’s story reflects a broader truth: healing is not just physical—it’s emotional, social, and deeply human.

Through her work with Imerman Angels, she is helping to redefine what support looks like in the cancer space. By connecting people through shared experience, she is building a community rooted in empathy, understanding, and hope.

Because when someone says, “I’ve been there,” it changes everything.
