Twist on Cancer: Cancer changed my life, but it does not get to define all of it. Being an Inspiration for Twist Out Cancer gave me the opportunity to share my story with my artist, Sally, and then see my experience reflected back through her eyes. That was incredibly meaningful and emotional for me. Truly, it touched and warmed my heart. One of the biggest lessons I have learned is that life after a cancer diagnosis is not about going back to who you were before. Sometimes you can’t go back—but you may not know what comes next, either. It is okay to feel grateful to be alive while also grieving what cancer has changed or taken from you. Both can be true. I want others to know they do not have to figure out what comes next alone. Connection matters. Being seen matters. And sometimes sharing our stories helps someone else feel a little less alone in theirs.

Artist Statement: “Becoming” was born from Keri Darling’s courageous journey with blood cancer and all the challenges that have shaped her life. Her story touched me deeply, not just because of her survival, but because of the quiet, uncertain path of becoming someone new- the someone who has been a part of her all along. The painting flows through layers of softness, both opaque and transparent colors, texture, and gesture, mirroring that transitional space where our old lives have shifted, and we start to uncover who we truly are. Even beneath the gentle washes, glimpses of what was before linger—nothing is erased, but everything is beautifully transformed. “Becoming” is a reflection of Keri’s unfolding: the courage to stand in the unknown, to honor what has been, and to remain open to what is still emerging.
