Artist Statement: Inspired by my conversations with my Inspiration, Terrance Jones, my song “Transmission of Love” is a music narrative of initial Cancer diagnosis, facing and making peace with the diagnosis, resolving to Live, triumphing over disease while embracing and being enveloped by Love. It’s a song in three parts, with the third part being a reclaimed version of the first part. It features trumpet, guitar, piano, synths, bass, drums, and manipulated electronics and samples. I composed, arranged, performed, mixed, and mastered all of the elements. There are no lyrics or sung/spoken words, but there are instances of Morse code spelling out the words “CANCER,” “LIVE,” and “LOVE.” There is power and beauty in the fight and in the connection with ourselves and with others. And there is always Love. I dedicate “Transmission of Love” to Terrance Jones, to my friend Tim, and to those who battle, have battled, and will battle prostate cancer.

Artist Statement: These pieces represent 6 different expressions of the correlation between Morse Code, Music, Love and Cancer. These are all topics my Co-Artist and I spoke in depth on during our meetings throughout this process.
The terms are linked in the following ways:
Rhythm and Beats: Both Morse code and music rely on rhythmic timing. In medicine, a cancer patient’s treatment cycles have a strict rhythm, while love is universally symbolized by the beating rhythm of the heart.
Signals and Transmissions: Morse code transmits hidden messages, music communicates emotion across barriers, cancer cells use abnormal signaling pathways to grow, and love relies on emotional signals and chemistry.
Interference and static: In Morse code and music, static, or dissonance disrupts the clarity of the transmission. In cancer, cell signaling is plagued by genetic interference. In love, emotional “noise” or miscommunication creates friction in a relationship.
This is what I picked up on as I sat with the musical piece created by Bart Miltenberger. My hope is that the sound is reflected in each painting.
