Twist on Cancer: Wanting to get my voice and story out there drew me to this unique artistic program. Seeing things from different angles and perspectives were a part of my coping tools during my treatment, connecting beautifully with Maryam's unique photographic representation of some of my miracles.

Artist Statement: In Light Through Darkness, I explore themes of resilience and hope inspired by Harriet Cabelly’s personal journey through cancer survivorship. The piece reflects the process of navigating life’s challenges with strength, gratitude, and the discovery of silver linings in even the darkest moments. Just as the long exposure technique builds light in the darkness of buildings, I wanted to highlight Harriet’s experience of battling cancer as a symbol of light amid the shadows of uncertainty.
Harriet mentioned, "There is a crack, a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in," from Leonard Cohen's Anthem. This resonated deeply with me, symbolizing how our vulnerabilities allow light and hope to enter our lives.
A pivotal moment in Harriet’s life was her love of ballroom dancing, symbolized in the window, one of the last things she did before her diagnosis. The city setting captures Harriet’s New York roots, symbolizing the challenges of navigating traffic, and the purple tint reflects her favorite color and evokes the memory of rushing home from treatment to light her purple Sabbath candelabra, finding light in the darkness. The sunset sky represents her story of the "room with a view", and the beams of light echo her nightly pill cocktail, marking an important part of her journey.
The piece is intentionally disjointed, mirroring how Harriet’s cancer journey was unpredictable. Despite this, she persisted, capturing a complete picture of resilience and hope. I greatly enjoyed listening to and understanding Harriet's story and could not have asked for better inspiration!
