Triple negative breast cancer survivor
Twist on Cancer: I used to measure strength through fitness. How far or fast could I run? How much could I lift? And while I have hated every second of it, cancer showed me a different side of myself. It forged a strength in me I’d never seen.

Artist Statement: Before our initial Facetime call, Margaret’s identity remained veiled, offering only fragments of information. Yet, these seemingly insignificant details ignited a profound exploration, setting me on an intimate journey of connection, discovery, and kinship. Through heartfelt conversations, Margaret’s battle with triple-negative breast cancer emerged—a journey of triumph over initial diagnosis in 2020, only to face recurrence in 2022 and 2023. When I asked, “What brings you joy?” Her words painted a vivid portrait of loved ones—the comforting cocoon of her husband’s presence, the melodic cadence of her children’s laughter, and the embrace of her extended family—an orchestra of strength and solace. “Familia,” born from these exchanges, is a tribute to Margaret’s devotion and her family’s indomitable spirit. Its color palette echoes the vibrant hues of Casa Colonial Homes, a nod to Margaret’s rich Mexican heritage, infused with shades of affection, pride, and vitality. Each figure in the composition embodies a distinct essence: the steadfast presence of her spouse, the playful spirit of her daughter, the warmth exuded by her son, and Margaret herself—the cornerstone of their unity. Organic patterns envelop Margaret’s head, sweater, and her husband’s hoodie, symbolizing cancer’s intrusive presence in their shared narrative. Amidst these depictions, geometric forms and hearts stand firm, a testament to the unwavering support provided by extended family members and the larger community. In “Familia,” I pay homage to Margaret’s resolute spirit, capturing the embrace of family. Throughout life’s tumultuous journey, their love remains a steadfast North Star, casting its light through the darkest passages.
