Artist Statement: I had the privilege of partnering with Olga Tsoudis as the inspiration for this piece. Olga is a vibrant, optimistic woman whose Greek heritage is central to her identity. An avid traveler, artist, and advocate for well-being, she brings warmth and positivity to those around her. Olga’s cancer journey began unexpectedly. What she affectionately called “Flory Fifi,” a fibroid causing abnormal bleeding, ultimately led to the discovery of a cancerous mass. Diagnosed with Stage 1C ovarian cancer, Olga chose observation rather than chemotherapy. Her experience involved ongoing testing, consultations with multiple specialists, and the emotional uncertainty that often accompanies survivorship. These challenges were intensified by the loss of both her mother and brother to cancer only weeks after their diagnoses. Their deaths understandably deepened her fears and concerns about her own future. Yet Olga’s story is one of resilience, gratitude, and hope. She supports others through volunteer work with the Cancer Support Community of Northern Arizona and credits her devoted husband, whom she affectionately calls her “sexy caretaker,” along with a strong circle of friends, for helping her navigate this difficult chapter. The visual foundation of this artwork originated from a microscopic image of adult granulosa cancer cells. Titled Thank You, Friend, the piece reflects Olga’s deep appreciation for the people who surrounded and supported her throughout her cancer journey. Colors and forms were chosen to honor elements meaningful to Olga. The composition’s many unique circular shapes symbolize the challenge of distinguishing healthy cells from cancerous ones. Thank You, Friend celebrates the power of connection, gratitude, and the unwavering support that carries us through life’s most uncertain moments.
