Mast Cell Activation Syndrome
Twist on MCAS: I’ve learned that resiliency comes from within and that you are never given a challenge you cannot handle. I live with a form of anaphylactic MCAS. Anaphylaxis used to be my worst fear as a child but I’ve learned how to live fearlessly in ways I couldn’t have imagined. I have traveled, gone out to places alone, invested time in hobbies, and completed my Master’s (and clinical license) in Social Work; a field that I love and fits me as a person. These are all things I would’ve never thought I would accomplish, even before chronic illness.

Artist Statement: My inspiration Sarah answered the 20 questions and shared them with me. I was inspired by these answers; What is your diagnosis? – Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, How do you choose to live with the disease?- I try to live as carefree as possible, always looking for what caused it and trying to work on that too. I am a go getter., What is your “twist” on SM?- my self portrait would involve my spine and the fact that my bubbly personality is often clouded in depression and nihilism.
This artwork reflects the lived experience of an individual with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS). MCAS is a distinct condition from Systemic Mastocytosis (SM).
