Twist on Cancer: Before cancer, I felt as if I was just going through the motions of what I felt was expected of me. I was not truly living. Cancer has opened my eyes to what is truly important to me in my life, and that joy and beauty can come from the most unexpected events and dark times. Family, connections, beauty, colors, love. More time on grandma's couch, which encompasses all of these things!

Artist Statement: When I met with Heather, we immediately hit it off. We started to discuss places where she feels safe: her “happy place.” She immediately thought of her grandmother’s couch. She sent me a photo, and I used it as my reference for our painting. For additional inspiration, I referenced Henri Matisse’s painting “Seville Still Life,” which also focuses on a couch. It’s a great responsibility to create a piece of art that represents someone’s “happy place.” I’m honored, as always, to participate in Brushes With Cancer and shoulder that responsibility as an artist.
