Anita Bhandari and Rebecca Roin
The Story

Twist on Cancer:I felt an instant connection with Rebecca and loved how she also brought out a creative side in me that I didn't even know I had during our sessions. It was such a special experience for us to get to know each other, hear each other's stories, and then see that connection come to life through her artwork. Sharing my journey and then seeing it come to life through someone else's eyes is so healing. Art has such a way of inspiring emotions and I'm so thankful that I met Rebecca and was able to find yet another avenue of healing.

Artist Statement: It has been a true pleasure working with Anita. She exudes warmth and kindness. Her cancer story began when her young husband, at the age of 40, was diagnosed with gastric cancer. She was his sole caregiver for the entire time that he fought the disease. It was a year filled with doctors, appointments, hospitals, treatments and emotions. Anita’s husband did not survive and it was devastating for her and everyone in their world. Five years after his death, I met Anita as she joined Twist out Cancer to make connections with other people who have had similar experiences with cancer and loss. Her path has led her to make professional changes and find ways in which she can feel strong and happy. Her new roles as a personal trainer and real estate broker are a combination of her interests and strengths and she is finding balance.
The art that I created, inspired by Anita, is about putting different combinations of ideas and practices together in order to create a new version of peace and harmony.
