Survivor
Twist on Cancer: I will never say “thank you cancer” but it has changed how I live my life. Getting diagnosed with Stage IV neuroendocrine at the age of 30 threw my whole life for a loop. I’m still here seven years later and thriving. Cancer has made me take risks I’m not sure I would have taken without the diagnosis. I started living my life the way I wanted. I don’t call myself a cancer survivor, I call myself a cancer badass because that is what cancer has made me become. I do cancer advocacy as a way to make meaning of this crazy thing that happened to me. I share my story for those who aren’t ready to share theirs or those who are no longer here to share.

Artist Statement: Connecting with Bethany was deeply inspiring. After being diagnosed with stage IV neuroendocrine cancer, she made a powerful decision to fully embrace life, not identifying as a survivor, but proudly calling herself a cancer badass. Her fearless approach shines through in her cancer advocacy and the unforgettable experiences she’s pursued—like rock climbing in the Gunks and skydiving. We bonded over her love of animals, especially zebras, which felt like a perfect symbol for both her rare diagnosis and her unique strength. In medicine, zebras represent uncommon conditions, and Bethany embodies that rarity with resilience and vibrance. I was moved to reflect her spirit in a painting, incorporating colors that hold personal meaning for her.
