Survivor
Twist on Cancer: Two-time survivor. Reformed perfectionist. Relentless connector.

I’m a two-time cancer survivor — but cancer didn’t define me; it refined me. It gave me perspective, forced me to slow down, and helped me shed the perfectionism I once clung to. Today, I proudly call myself a reformed perfectionist, a deeply involved mother, a loving wife, and a devoted daughter who’s learned to lead with grace, not pressure.

But survivorship isn’t a finish line — it’s a roller coaster. I still live with the ongoing reality of lymphedema, daily medications, and the ever-present undercurrent of anxiety that cancer can leave behind. Some days are easier than others, but I’ve learned to ride the highs and lows with more compassion — especially toward myself.

Through organizations like Sharsheret, Jefferson, and Unite for HER, I’ve become a breast cancer “buddy,” supporting others through the same storm I once faced. It’s not just something I do — it’s a calling. I see it as a privilege to walk alongside newly diagnosed women, not just as a survivor, but as a friend who truly understands.

After my initial conversation with these women, I always follow up with an email full of local nonprofits, free resources, support groups, and wellness tools. As a Wharton MBA, I take pride in being resourceful — some might even say I’m a bit of a detective when it comes to tracking down answers, deals, or hard-to-find services. I love helping my buddies access discounted wigs, mastectomy bras, and anything that helps them feel like themselves again. I’m a seasoned bargain shopper with a knack for finding what people need — often before they even ask. It’s my way of showing love: through information, connection, and care.

This artwork reflects not just my story, but the strength, softness, and sense of service that emerged from it — and continues to evolve with every twist and turn of the journey.

Artist Statement: Keep on Keepin’ On was inspired by Ilene Cantos, a woman of valor whose journey through two different cancers has been marked by resilience, generosity, and an unshakable hope. Despite the dark days she has faced, Ilene has continued to move forward with a brightness and lightness that uplifts those around her.

As I painted, the color pink felt like the right language—an echo of courage, compassion, and vitality. Each shape, mark, and gesture carries both Ilene’s spirit and my own, layered together in a conversation between struggle and strength, vulnerability and beauty.

This piece is not only a reflection of Ilene’s endurance, but also a reminder of the power of hope—how it radiates beyond the self and becomes a gift to others.
