Twist on Cancer: Cancer was a complete pivot for me, impacting every aspect of my life. What I’ve found over these 8 years of living with this terminal disease is that while there’s joy and growth in the cracks of the grief and suffering. And perhaps because it has to find its way to crack through, it’s stronger and more poignant than before diagnosis. Like meeting Marea, my amazing artist, in a short time became such a meaningful burst of joy. She listened with her whole soul and I’m excited to see how that transpires in the piece. I want others who are facing a scary diagnosis know that they are an individual, not a statistic. It’s a twisty marathon with lots of gray areas that will stretch you. Stretching can be good. There’s hope for their future, but also in the journey. Namaste.

Artist Statement: Healing Herd In honor of Julie Clauer, an inspiration who celebrates eight years of terminal cancer survivorship this March. Julie is a nationally recognized patient advocate and clinical trial educator. She tirelessly serves others while working through her own health struggles with a grateful heart and a generous spirit. Julie was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer shortly after giving birth to her daughter. She quickly found resources and support in her lifelong friend and doctor, Eve Glazier. Julie moved from Chicago back to her homebase of California to continue traveling, researching and building an incredible healthcare team. She built an integral “herd” of supporters along the way as well. Elephant herds heal through deep social bonds, collective care and emotional support. A wounded herd member is surrounded by the others to protect them as they heal. Julie’s 13 herd members are depicted as elephants; the two at the bottom represent Julie‘s parents. “The Three Cups” from Tarot symbolize parties, reunions, and the emotional support shared in these joyful gatherings. Chrysanthemums symbolize joy, longevity, friendship, and loyalty. The petunia flowers honor Dr. Glazier, lovingly called Dr. Petunia by Julie and her family. The sun depicts joy, happiness and transformation; the star, cosmic protection. The world- loosely formed by continents of elephants encircling Julie‘s face- represents balance and achievement. I feel transformed from my time getting to know Julie. Because of this experience, I was able to embrace a new process of artmaking. Instead of my usual cut paper, I experimented with layers of plastic, paint, paper, and pen. Julie has such incredible warmth and energy. She has built an incredible community in so many spaces.
