Artist Statement: “Within Reach” was created to reflect the conversations and memories that Kyle shared with me about his experiences during and after his cancer diagnosis. The staples on the moon and stitching of the painted compositions represent the surgical interventions that saved his life. I chose to create a two-toned image to mirror the dichotomy that showed up in our conversations, musing over the fear of the cancer coming back and the desire to live life to the fullest. This piece reflects the idea that everything feels “”within reach” again. The gray jay featured central in the painting is one that Kyle actually held on one of his many hikes. His wife, Lisa, encouraged him to get out into the mountains, and he has since summited all of the peaks over 4000ft in New Hampshire. This artwork is a tribute to his adventures still to come.
