Artist Statement: Alice Raymond’s early experience of impermanence, marked by frequent moves, naturally sparked her interest in architecture, geography, maps, and tools for documenting and locating spaces. Her work explores adaptation to new environments, which she interprets through personal and interdisciplinary cartography, analyzing the impact and perception of place from physical, social, and temporal perspectives. Her research explores themes of movement, migration, habitat, ecology, and language, employing various methods of codification. With (Re)Construction, Alice created a work in response to the story of M., who inspired her: a cancer diagnosed at an early stage, fortunately cured without complications. Her body, damaged by the disease, was reconstructed immediately after her recovery. Today, she cherishes the friendships she has forged with other women who recovered around the same time as she did and is joyfully preparing for her retirement by renovating her home in Chicago. In this work, the artist draws a parallel between the home and the body, which she considers our first home. “Technically, I painted body shapes in cheerful colors on a Chicago house poster. My work is abstract; the people are more suggested than depicted. The work consists of four parts, like a group of friends forming a whole. These parts also reflect the body and its four limbs, making the torso and heart possible through the interplay of the pieces. The heart is inside. Inside the body, inside the home, where friends are always welcome” writes Alice Raymond.
