“Finding Joy”
Acrylic on canvas
22” x 28” x 1”
$950
Artist Statement: She's in Texas, I am in Michigan. Her roots are in Scottish, Italian and Native American, mine are Indian and Pakistani. But we ‘got’ each other right away. As women, mothers and breast cancer survivors, we share similar attitudes. Refusing to let cancer define our lives or shackle our souls. So far apart but yet so close.
This painting inspired by Rachel has many layers of meanings. The dark in the background signifies the struggles she went through in this journey.
She recognizes hard times as obstacles but they don't define her, in her own words,
“It just adds to who I am.” The flowers bloom, a testament to the sunshine she brings to the world. They are symbolic of her positivity and attitude toward life. The flowers in this work, although beautiful, have grit, signifying resilience.
The white signifies her upbeat spirit that's intact irrespective of the hardships. The textured ‘petals’ are symbolic of the wings of the dragonfly, her spirit animal. It signifies change and growth, which she values and embodies.
“Cancer is not who we are, doesn't mean I dont have hard dark days, but i think you can have hard dark days and still find joy.”
I feel blessed to be touched by her. She will remain close.
