Artist Statement: Creating this piece for Tonya was so much fun. I was able to use my favorite whimsical, pop-art style, all while telling her story. Tonya discovered she had stage 4 breast cancer after hearing a voice say “touch your breasts” while she was in the shower. She said the voice was so life-like that she called out to see if anyone was in her home. Then she heard it again. So she touched her breasts, and that’s when she discovered a lump. Tonya’s main reasons for fighting, and continuing to fight, are her daughter, granddaughter, and 11 other best friends with whom she met in chemo. Tonya loves to read and believes that life is meant to be lived. The center of this piece is Ocean, Tonya’s beautiful granddaughter. Surrounding the Ocean are 12 books, each symbolizing Tonya and her 11 closest friends from chemo. The titles of the books are some of the important thoughts that Tonya has shared with me, and the colors represent my interpretation of Tonya’s vibrant personality!
